sorry but you can't make new catagories but you can define new object styles within those categories. for example you might have a computer with a monitor and keyboard. all under the specialty equipment category. you can make an object style for both the keyboard and monitor that will seperate their visibilty settings from the others.

to my knowledge there really isn't another reason to create another category other than changing these kind of settings independently Crying such as lineweights)  <-smiley isn't supposed to be there. categories are only here so they can be easily fileable within your browser tree (someone correct me if i am wrong).

as for changing how your familiy snaps. dunno about that. to take a typical door (i think that centerline is always there). you can define how it is placed though by setting a reference plane to "define origin" (such as the right side refernce plane) your dimensions will also snap to this point instead of the centerline.

I have been trying to change the origin of my components when they drop in. I read your response about changing the origin of the ref plane and I did that. It changed, However the cabinet I created does not snap to the front of my counter top it snaps on the side but not the front. As I fiddled with my components I discovered that you can make reference lines strong or weak how do these guys work? Are they used to control snaps? in plan or elevation? the casework is dashed under the counter but i want it to snap to a corner.

strong reference planes have the highest priority for dimensioning and snapping. they can be used in plan and elevation. there is also another checkbox for defining those planes as an origin. fiddling around with both of these properties in your family files should get you the result you are looking for.
