I have taken an existing structural beam family, (W-Wide Flange) and opened it for editing. I duplicated the file and then proceeded to edit it, rename it, and load it into my project. Everything worked out great!!!! EXPECT the visibility is a little different. I need the visibility of my beam to act like the visibility of the existing beams, especially when the visibility is set to “course.” This “course” setting is much liked by the engineers as it represents that of an analytical stick frame view. Attached is the beam file that I created. I’ve probably made a few fundamental mistakes. Any kind help and advice you can offer is much appreciated.

It was set to 'girder', but when I changed it to 'joist' nothing really changed. Do I have to reopen the family temp and change the selection there? I'll give that a try if I can.

Okay, it worked. It needed to be set to "girder" and the family visibility needed to be edited in order to show up in the "course" view. Thanks phildixon!!!!
