i want to place a roof beam along the center of the roof, and i was wondering how to do it. by the way i want it to be a wood beam

Select your beam size from the structure menu and open the view that allows you to accurately place the beam in the 'X' & 'Y' directions. At the top of the screen, set the plane to the view you wish to see the beam in. It may or may not be visible from the current view but don't worry. Cut a section through the building where the beam was placed and you should be able to 'find' your newly placed beam. Select it and through the properties dialog, under analytical projection plane at the bottom of the box, set it to a known reference plane/point that will allow you to accurately place the beam in the 'Z' coordinate. Next, go to the top of the dialogue box and set the height relative to the analytical projection plane you just set. e.g. if you know that your ridge is 10'-4 3/8" above your second floor plate ht., then set your analytical projection plane to second floor plate. At the top of the dialogue under 'geometry offset' is where you would enter the 10'-4 3/8". The reference level was set when you placed the beam so it's greyed out but you can "edit work plane" if you need to change it. Keep in mind that whatever you set your reference level to, is the view in which you will be able to see the beam. Verify your visibility settings have structure turned on and the detail level is set properly. It may require playing around with these settings as they tend to interact with each other. When setting the analytical projection plane, referencing the beam tends to hide the visibility of the beam in your plan views.
