Material parameters are set during the extrusion process. Sometimes when a family is made the material attribute is neglected. To fix it, you will need to edit the family. Once, in the family select a part and click 'edit'. When you are in the extrusion edit mode you can apply a material parameter in the properties dialog. Then finish sketch. So, you won't need to change the extrusion sketch, just add the parameter and finish. You can set the material in the family by simply choosing a material for each extrusion, or you can set up a the material parameter so that the material can be set in the model. If you need more specific help with adding parameters, let me know.

This raises a family creation standard policy that should apply to this site and Revit in general. All materiality should be exposed to the user via a material parameter in the family. Material naming conventions should probably be established as well as right now they are inconsistant even with the OTB Revit families. Some materials are called what the object is: Glass - Reflective and others are called by a category: Finishes:Interior - Paint. Sometimes materials are named way too simplistically like Glass, Metal, Wood and do not provide enough meaninful differentiation to be used by objects. Trying to navigate through the myriad of materials at rendering time is almost a hopeless task right now. I will attempt to start a family creation and material guide one of these days and get it posted for comment.
