I have a question about 3d visibility. I created a massing model, with different masses on different levels...nothing too fancy. Is there a way to filter these elements on/off either by level or some of the other attributes that I have tagged the mass elements with?

You best bet is probably to use phases and filters. If that does not work well put your create-in-place elements in under different families e. i. 'casework', 'walls', 'floors' etc. (or after created -edit your family. Select object and pick family types)
This is a way to 'cheat' to make the program do what you want.
