Hammer,
The problem you are having is due to the Ground plane being rendered and obscuring your model. You will want to make sure these are either set at the proper level, or turned off all together. These are global and go to 'infinity', so they have a tendency to get in the way, other than on flat sites. It's there as an option to placing topo or a flat plane for your site. I'm also assuming you're using 8.1 (similar for the others.)
Make sure you to to the following areas and check them BOTH.
1) Rendering Tab (on the left) > Settings > Environment > Advanced (at bottom) Groundplane (Uncheck box)
2) Advanced Model Graphics (little icon at the bottom of the main model window) > Cast Shadows (check box) > Sun and Shadow Settings (click the arrow located to the right) > Ground Plane (at the bottom of the new dialogue box) - make sure it's not checked.
This should clear up the grey plane. In versions prior to 8.0, there was a bug that made it difficult to turn the Rendering Ground plane off. If this is the case, make it so its elevation is LOW enough, and place an element around your building to represent your site (could be a Floor element).
Hope this helps,
Kyle
