Why does Revit Structure 2012 ask me if I want to "overwrite the existing version" or "overwrite the existing version and its parameter values" when all I want to do is load another type from the type catalog? If I pick overwrite, then it produces dozens of errors with the only option being to remove the constraints I've placed between another existing type and other building elements. Why would it want to wipe out constraints between a bunch of 3"x2" angles and beams they're attached to in order for me to load a 4"x4" angle into my model? That makes no sense.

The only time that the :overwrite the existing version" warning pops up is if you already have that type inserted into your project, you should just be able to click on the beam/truss/column whatever it may be and select the size from your type selector pulldown in the properties.

That's correct.
You can in fact return to the same Type Library and load a different type and it will not prompt to over write.
If the Type is already loaded you get the prompt.
To see if the Type is loaded look under Families in the Project Browser and expand the applicable Category and Family.
The loaded Types will be listed there.
Sounds like you are in fact loading a Type that's already in the project.

Yeah, I probably should've mentioned that I'd already checked that. The type does NOT show up in the project, either in the type selector or the project browser. That was my first thought, too. See the pictures below of the project browser and the error message that I get when trying to load a L5"x3"x1/4" type from the "L-Angle" family. Every other time in the last year plus that I've been heavily using Revit, I've always been able to load other types from the same catalog and never had this issue come up. It has always behaved as you described, which is why I'm at a loss now.
