In the program - go to 'Help' pull down menu, 'Tutorials', 'Creating Families'.

You can either use the Modelling-Create tab to create an object in the project, or you can create a custom family using File-New-Family and choose the template you want to use (window, door, furniture, etc).

As kesflower stated, make it a family if you want to keep it in your library to use again in any project. Use create if it's basically a one time shot custom to your current project.

You should have tutorials in your help menu. Open Revit, click the Help pulldown - tutorials - Creating families, and then go through the tutorial. It doesn't take you through a pool, but it shows you the basics of using extrusions, sweeps, blends, etc and how to apply a material to your object. I hope this helps. The tutorials are wonderful for getting a grasp of what Revit can do, so if you've got the time, I'd go through all of them.
