So I made a nifty family in RS 2012 for an elevator pit, not knowing that you apparently can't "save as" to an older version in Revit and apparently never will be able to.... So is this family off-limits for me now on any project where our clients aren't using 2012 yet? Or is there some way to be able to workaround what I consider a major flaw in Revit that I'm sure Autodesk will say isn't an issue. I put a lot of time into making this and another family that I can't use now. Sad

Sorry, this is one of those Revit areas you have to think ahead.  Revit has never been backward compatable.

Yeah, so I've learned the last few days. I've only been using Revit for a few months now, and only regularly the last 2 or 3 months. I've just never used any other software (that I can remember) that didn't have a way to save down to a previous version, so it really took me by surprise, especially after using Autocad continuously since back when it was still a DOS program. If I'd known this outcome was possible, then I definitely would've planned ahead! I kinda thought there would be some consistency in programming philosophy from the same company. And yes, I've already read that Revit is a model and not a collection of lines like ACAD, but still, I'm just thinking of it from the programming side.

So is there any workaround? Some way to export to an intermediary format that RS2011 could read? Even if it's not a perfect transfer, it might be better than starting over from scratch and remodeling and retesting. Thanks.

My recommendation is to do something simple in your current project - whatever it takes and then when you upgrade on your next project, you will have your family.

There is no work around for a parametric family which yours appears to be since you said "testing".
