After my initial disapointment that thickened slab edges weren't easier to edit in Revit, I tried to make a new family where the dimensions  would be available to change on the fly like many of the other elements in the model. I have been beating my head against a Revit wall trying to get this to work, have watched videos and read books on family creation, and this is still incredibly frustrating. I haven't seen any families like that available that other people have made, so now I have to ask if this is even possible? I can make a slab edge with labeled dimensions and flex it in the family editor, by putting new values in for different sides, but when I load it in my model, the parameters aren't available for editing. I made a shear tab family that kind of works - at least the parameters show up in my model so I can specify the number of bolts, length, width, etc. I don't know what the difference is, but apparently I'm missing something here. I'd be extremely grateful for any help. Thanks.

The slab edge is effectively a sweep, the profile parameters are not editable from the sweep properties, however they are editable under families-profiles in the Project browser. this means creating dfferent profiles for each different condition

Hmmm, yeah, creating different profiles was what I was wanting to avoid. I was trying to use this as a practical use for a parameter-driven family. It seemed like it would be an easy introduction to using these families and parameters that everyone says ad nauseum are the "heart" of Revit. Supposedly, I'm not really using the software unless I know how to make custom families to handle all the stuff that's not built-in, and yet every time I try to implement them in a real project, I run into issues like this. I would say you have to be more of a programmer than a designer to understand the work flow in Revit, but I've been there, done that, and it was far easier!

Is it just me or there a huge learning curve for this software compared to most everything else? I'm using Revit Structure 2011.

I started on Revit 2008, Arch, Struct, MEP. Yes the learning curve is steep, very steep. But I wouldn't go back. Making families will come with time. Often it is much easier to make the simple sweep than to try and create the solve all answer on your first go around. Revit can be very frustrating, especially in the early days. But once you get the hang of it you will really like it.
