Hi there I attached simple family of a chimney that I insert over slate roof, the problem is that when I join the lead tile to the chimney to create a nice visible join the material (or the visibility in another family) of one become the material of the other even though I gave each of them different material parameter. Any suggestion? nirim

I was able to join the chimney to the roof with 'shakes' material without a problem. I think you have software issues.

Hi dgcad Back from long weekend (hence the delay in reply). I am not fully understand your answer, do you mange to join both lead flashing and the chimney pipe  inside the family) and yet maintain each of the elements’ materials deferent? nirim

nirim, I think I understand your question and the answer is this. Within a Family, when you use join geometry, the second object "inherits" the material (including materal parameters) of the first. It will also inherit any visibility settings. So if you need seperate material parameters you will need to leave them unjoined. In your chimney family you can use a Void to "cut" the geometry that you don't need off the bottom of the chimney.

Hi JAMESHFRIMES Thanks, your answer is spot on. Problem with using void to cut the pipe, is that the pipe angle (relative to the lead flashing) is changeable, to adjust the chimney to whatever roof pitch. I wish the REVIT people will make something about it, it is rather fundamental to family construction. nirim

You can set the void to be an angle cut to match the roof. Is that how the boot is made?

A void works. It just has to be large enough to always cut the pipe. Just make sure that the only thing the void cuts is the pipe, and you should be good to go.
