Revit Arch 2010

We are working on an elementary school project in our office, 7 people working on the project.  File size is around 100 MB.  Monday we were all working on the project at the same time and we started to experience a serious slow down.  Everytime we selected something, or tried to stretch something, add something, delete something we would get a message informing us that the "Central file is being accessed by someone else and is not available." (see image attached).  It was a great cause for frustration.  Is there something that caused this?  Obviously there is, but we didn't have this problem last week.  I spoke to our tech support and they said the central file may have gotten "lock" at the server level and we needed our IT guy to unlock it?  Huh? They also recommended we open the file using the Audit feature.  Should this be done locally? Or on the Central?  Should this be normal procedure?  We make new local file weekly, and compress the Central file about that often as well.

We noticed in our journal files a number of "FileAccessSleep" messages and tech support said that is probably caused by the central file being locked.  Has anyone experienced this?  How is this caused?  How can it be fixed?

Thanks for your help in advance.

i just watched an Autodesk University session where a commpany had to deal with this same isssue. the main reason seemed to be to many users saving to the central file at the same time. if i have time i will try and post the link, it may be of help to you.

coreed may be right.

You might look at your save to central process and maybe even schedule that a bit.  I believe the article corred is looking for suggests that.  Remember, you can save locally and you are not losing anything, just not publishing or getting updates from others.

Coreed and WWWHub,

Thanks for the insights.  I wasn't sure if the syncronizing had anything to do with it, but with that many people on the job simultaneously, how often should people sync with central?  How do you schedule stuff like that?  Should everyone just be saving locally and sync later?  What settings for saving locally and synchronizing are people using?  Currently my save reminders are both set to 30 minutes.  Should the sync be higher?

What about the "locked" file?  Have either of you heard that before?  That came directly from Autodesk, but I don't know where to check to see if the central is locked.

Thanks again.

30 min reminders is not bad.  Are all of you working on similar platforms.  A very slow system or one working through a slow connection can slow all of you down - especially if they are doing frequent saves on the slow system.  Every time they save, they lock the central for access from someone just trying to modify an object.

As far as frequency of saves to central, that depends on what you are doing.  If you are working in a workset by youself, you may not need to save as often to central, just local.

Another item you should look at is your save to central pocess.  Revit saves from the view window(s) you are on.  Don't save to central from tiled views, rendered views or other memory intense views that have to be updated in the central.   We use a project/team legend view for all of our saves.  It is a legend view that we use to describe the project, it's phase and to communicate with others on the team.  Just a simple text view.

We are having the same issues currently, either resulting in irregular file handle issues or corrupt files.

I have been on Revit 2009 projects with up to 15 people at another office, and never had this issue.  But currently with 2010 and 8 users it is a problem.

We audit the file once a week, everybody makes a fresh local in the morning, and we have implemented some changes on the server side that were not completely inline with Autodesk's recommendations.

We use the workshare monitor to avoid syncing at the same time, but sometimes it happens.  It is difficult and unproductive to avoid at all times.

And it is still happening.  It is a significant issue and we are desperately looking to find a resolution.
