Hey everyone - My name is Josh, I graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering technology a couple years ago. I'm currently working in the field but not in a position that is related to the building industry or drafting. I look at galleries of awesome 3d renderings of buildings and interiors and I feel like it's something I would really love to do, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make a career out of doing just that? And if so, does it pay well? Money isn't everything but it does count for something lol. Either way, I'd still like to get training in AutoCAD and/or Revit. There seem to be plenty of resources for training, but any ideas where I can get the software at a relatively good price? Thanks!

Not sure if you can make a living out of Rendering with REVIT. You'll have to add in some Maya and or 3D Studio Max and you better be REAL good at it. Maybe specialize in the creation of Real People Content (RPC). People, vehicles, furniture, trees, etc. These items are used for rendering. Create *.rpc files for REVIT. You can download and install REVIT and run it for 30 days fully fuctional. You cannot create *.RPC files within REVIT. They must be created by a different software like Archvision (or MAX). After 30 days you can still run REVIT in demo mode but you cannot save anything. You can learn REVIT from several resources. There are lots of books at Amazon. The built in HELP tutorials are free and pretty good. This blog has lots of REVIT Tutorial resources > http://cadalot-revitlearningcurve.blogspot.com Youtube also has lots of REVIT tutorial videos. I would start with this channel > http://www.youtube.com/user/CADclips CADclips is also having a 50% off REVIT video tutorials sale until Monday > www.CADclips.com

dgcad is correct- revit is not provide presentation-quality rendering. It has a great out-of-box engine for 'fooling around' but not the type of quality you'll get with render-dedicated programs. To answer your question: Probably. There is a guy at our company who does only renderings. I don't know how much he makes, how many hours, whether or not he's contract or full-time, etc. Otherwise, another option worth considering is going to work for a contractor. A local contractor here is modeling many of their buildings in Revit prior to construction. Modeling buildings is a lot of fun (duct-work maybe not, but buildings yes.) Good luck.
