Either because of the newly installed Windows 7 or the AVG antivirus, when I installed Revit it failed (time and again) to install the templates and families, so my first practice project for testing Revit 2010 is being made almost exclusively with custom made objects. Recently I needed light fixtures, and I downloaded a few from the download section. However all the models are low quality. Both the existing models (revolves, sweeps, extrusions) and the ones I add later are polygonal instead of nicely rounded, like the shapes created in the project. I do have a workaround for this, but I'd rather do a family and instance it in the project, because I guess it would lighten up the rvt file. Not to mention that it's quite a mystery to me, because I don't remember having this problem before in the previous versions.

I created a jar directly in the project and is has the same problem!!! Why?? Every circle with a small radius eventually degenerates into octogons, hexagons, pentagons. I attached an image:

You will find that Revit is not good at modelling small items, particularly with the revolve.  Extrusions work a bit better though, so they should be better for the light that you're trying to do.  Generally, the faceting in an item such as the jars will not be noticeable in a rendering unless it's quite close.

Well I solved it by reinstalling Revit, this time properly, with all the templates and most families. Apparently all the content that it failed to install the first time somehow helps. I just fired it up again and did a very nice torus with the revolve, without any jagged surfaces.Tim123: I somewhat disagree. I did several maquettes in Revit, all to scale, and with various geometry "enhancements" like beveled edges, broken corners and the like (before I got my hands on 3ds Max) to make them as realistic as possible. They all turned out quite nice and believable. Indeed it doesn't fare too good in the 0-10mm range, but overall I find it does a good job modeling smaller things like light bulbs, cups, jars etc.

Well, actually I haven't solved the problem... The torus wasn't a good test model. It's all squarish like before, but at least now I can do my own families, I have the templates back. But I still remember (I THINK i remember) that round objects weren't this jagged in previous versions... I guess I don't remember correctly
