I am a student and a fairly new revit user, so I apologize if my question is obvious to a more experienced user. I downloaded the spiral staircase from this site (http://revitcity.com/downloads.php?action=view&object_id=7155) thinking it was a parametric family, but it turned out to be a rvt file. When I tried to simply copy and paste it into my project, it got all wonky... specifically, the railings for the stairs turned into a solid ring at the floor level. My question is, is there a better way to import the file into my project than just ctrl+c ctrl+v?

That is a fine way to import. It sounds like you just need to rehost the rail to the stair.

If any part of the stair, such as the rail or material, has a name that is already defined in the project then the project settings will overide. Give the rail a unique name before importing.
