When I create a beam it has the phase set to New Construction, logical.  Now I have multiple phases in a project I wish to create beams in a prior phase.  How can I do this without having to create the beam and then retrospectively amend its phase?

Duplicate views and set the phase in the view properties to 'Existing.'

Rename view appropriately.

Now, whenever you draw in the existing plan, it will create that element in that phase.

Yes thanks that works fine.  In this project there are several phases of propping, breaking out, new, more break out more temp works, more new ad infinitum.  Im finding it time hungry to switch from view to view plus some of the elements are located according to future elements thus proliferating the views or the phase filters required for working.  So Im trying to keep these down by playing with underlayed views but if anyone has another way I'd be very grateful.

You can create additional phases as required.  Go to Settings -> Phases

You can create phases as needed.

In regards to switching back and forth in views:

You can always create in the future and assign to a previous phase.

You can always export your plans to CAD and bring them back into Revit as an overlay.  I usually import as solid black, and then assign a half-toned dark color to the CAD background for visual contrast.  Works very well.
