I am making a Siphonic roof drain, and it has a few screws in it.  I am trying to make the allen wrench style head, the 6 sided deep well in the middle of the screw.  I pick a void form, and place it, but it doesnt cut it.  if I make it extend out past the screw head, it shows up past the screw head, but doesnt go into the screw.

The drain is made of two pieces, and those two pieces are on top of another, and are only 1/4" thick.  There is a protrusion for the screw to go into, and I just made the length of the protrusion the distance from the top of the screw to the bottom of the protrusion, and placed it into position (which actually goes thru the two peices)  I made the protrusion stick up above the topmost piece enough to be able to see it, simulating a screw.  I then added the void to that protrusion.

Here is the file if the description wasn't sufficient.  there are two places, the first in one of the 4 inner circles, and one on top of the middle circle.  I just cant get them to work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  I am new at this, and making families is tougher than actually working within the program.

You just need to cut geometry, but for something this small why don't you just use model lines?

Doesn't the void cut the geometry, or do I need to tell it to do so?

I know about model lines.  I was using this more or less as a training aid, while wanting to print this out for a brochure, so trying to make it look more real.

I was able to get it if I did each one separately, but when I did one, and copied or mirrored it, they ended up basically just being model lines, and not cuts or voids.

Learn to use your HELP for general questions like this.  It is really very good.  Search for "Void"

I'm Sorry, but I did.  I spent over and hour searching and reading, and the Help is not that good.  it explains things like if you understand it already.  It does not explain things too well if you dont.

Also, it may tell you HOW to do something, but not the WHEN or the WHY.

It also doesnt help you in troubleshooting.  I used a void, and it didnt do what I expected it to do.  I researched Void, and there is a simple drawing of a square with a square and it take the smaller square away.  Real simple.  Mine was a little more complicated than that, and also I got it to work sometimes, not everytime.

By what I read, it should work.  It didn't.  Also, when I copied or mirrored them, it didn't work.  I couldn't find anything telling me I cant copy or mirror them.  Just that alone drove me nuts.

The Help really needs allot of HELP!

Did you read this:?

Cut Geometry function hideInfo() { info = document.getElementById('infoline'); info.innerHTML = ' '; info.style.visibility = 'hidden'; } function showInfo(title) { info = document.getElementById('infoline'); info.innerHTML = title; info.style.visibility='visible'; }

With the Cut Geometry command, you can pick and choose which geometry gets cut and which does not, regardless of when you created the geometry.

NoteWhile this command and the Don’t Cut Geometry command are primarily for families

I dont think so.  I didnt know about cutting geometry until you mentioned it, I was using the voids and researching it that way.  I will look into that, THANKS!

jcrocco,

What I wrote in my last post was copied straight out of the HELP.  When I said the HELP was really good, I meant it.  BUT - You need to learn how to use it.  It is usually easier to use the search rather than the topics.  In this case, searching for VOID as I suggested brings up a limited amount of topics and all the information you needed was there.
