Hi All, I have created a column family by using the standard M_Rectangular Column family as the base and simply added sweeps to creae the column I require. When altering the height of these columns within my drawing the sweep used to form the capital doesn't move with the adjusted column height. How do I get around this? cadjockey

Hi Xane, I placed a dimension in the family elevation from the top work plane (top of column) to the bottom of the capital and locked it. I loaded this updated family into my project. This didn't seem to fix the issue. Any other suggestions? cadjockey

You should lock your sketch lines to reference planes that are constrained to the top as required. Locking outside of the sketch isn't as effective. Alternatively do the capital as a nested family using a strong reference for the top then constrain to that.

Hi Mr Spot, Sorry to sound ignorant. I have only been using revit for a few days. When you say sketch lines you are refering to the sweep I created at the top of the column to form the capital? This sweep seems to be quite independent to the column and can be moved freely up and down the column. How would I lock this to the top reference plane of the column so as to have it move in unison with the top of the column. The column is and extruded element. cadjockey

Okay so its a sweep... When you created the sweep you should've set the top reference plane as the work plane. This will allow it to adjust with the top boundary. Then when sketching the profile you would lock the lines to the reference planes in the sketch as required. HTH. No worries, I hope you enjoy the learning process and there is a big user group out there willing to help.

Hi Mr Spot, Thanks for the help. I'll try again. I am frantically assessing the revit software for our office. I am hoping to put it through it's paces just enough to convince my boss that this is the future in documenting a project. The more I play with this toy the more I am falling in love with it. cadjockey.

Hi Mr Spot, I have used the standard M_Rectangular Column family that comes with the software and added the sweeps to this project. I notice that there is both reference planes and level lines within this family. When I alter the level line dimension the capital will move with the column. This makes sense as one of the options available when setting the workplane of the sweep is this level (called 'upper level'Winking. I used this workplane. The reference plane is not available to set as the workplane. It is obviously the controlling constraint when you need to alter the height of the column within your project. How do I select this reference plane as the workplane? Sorry to be pain. There are alot of columns that may need to be altered. cadjockey

To select reference plane as workplane click in menu workplane icon, then will open the window where you can select workplane by name ( refernece plane 'upper ...'Winking or pick face should be workplane.

Basically, you need to lock your sketch lines to the planes on top of the column (or something like that). It's been a while since I've made a column in Revit.
