Hi -- since this morning, my project has been having trouble displaying correctly in a number of the 3D views.  This isn't a problem limited to one machine--every computer I open the file on displays the same set of flaws.

In a 3D view I had set up as roofless, the walls, regardless of being hidden line or wireframe are semi-transparent, showing everything behind them while remaining shaded, like some sort of messed up wireframe drawing.  Shading without edges restores the opacity of my model, but all edges are jagged or wavy.

Another 3D view is in better shape, though the surface hatch seems projected outward through other nearby elements, unless I zoom in extremely close, at which time things mysteriously display correctly.  the farther out I zoom, the worse it becomes.

I see no rhyme or reason to this behavior.  To further confound me, my oldest backup file is behaving the same way, now.  There have been no major updates to our network, no recent downloads for revit... Oh, plus, rendering these views, which has never been a problem before, results in the model being rendered with a number of polygons that can be counted on two hands.   Plan views and the actual emelment properties are solid, thankfully.

Here's a picture of it at its most distorted, if anyone can identify what might make it look so terrible, or just wants to be amused.

Since this seems to be isolated to 3d views, I would look at your gpu.

are your gpu drivers upto date?

are you using openGL?

computer specs?

- isn't it a dwg-file (or other file) on a level, not turned off?

- maybe the shadow option?

- what happens when you import the complete file (or copy) into a new one?

Thanks for the suggestions--I disabled openGL, updated my drivers, and while that didn't fix the problem, it doesn't  hurt, at least.  I found a solution that's good enough for now; I used a 3D view i had set up for the site, which wasn't distorted for some reason, duplicated it, and matched the properties of my old roofless view.

It seems that the view just got corrupted... I don't know what could cause that, but the view was just messed up, and there didn't seem to be a way to fix it.  So, start fresh with a new view.  Kind of frightening, and I hope this isn't foreshaddowing of more less superficial problems to come.

Here are my computer specs:

Dell Precision PWS490, XP Pro SP2, Intel Xeon CPU, E5320 @ 1.8GHz, 1.86GHz - 3.25BG of Ram

Nvidia Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI, Driver Version 6.14.11.8265 (just updated it today)

 How do I enable OpenGL?

it must be an issue with the entire file.  i did all of the suggestions and though it helped a little, it still didn't really work.  I'll keep looking for more suggestions, but thanks to everyone suggestions thus far

Okay, this is goign to sound really, really stupid --

ALTHOUGH I don't know why the view keeps flying out to hunreds of thousands of miles, the solution if your model starts looking wierd and semitransparent is to:

1.  Enable the Viewcube, if it isn't already on.

2.  Hover the mouse above and slightly to the left of the view cube, and click on the "home" that appears.

This will reorient your view, but also reset the camera distance to the default, giving you a few hours of peaceful work until it tweaks out again.
