So we’re gearing up for the switch from AutoCAD to Revit. One thing we need to do is have a color coded status of our equipment. In AutoCAD we had blocks of our equipment that we’d mark as existing, new, demo, etc by assigning them to a layer that controlled the line type and color of the block. We need to be able to graphically be able to reproduce that same type of thing in Revit. Any ideas?

Revit uses different linetypes to display existing, demolished and new by default. These can be overridden in the phase overrides and the colors can be changed if required to display demolished and existing as certain colors. Its a positive change to start using Revit, and productivity will be improved once the users are up to speed. However, AutoCAD has evolved over years to show various things in certain ways that are suitable for AutoCAD, - Revit is a different animal and the way that it's used is different. Although it's generally possible to reproduce AutoCAD drawings with Revit, it should not be forced to do so. Discover the way that Revit produces drawings and let the office practices evolve to suit the Revit environment - don't force it into an AutoCAD environment.

I understand why you did what you were doing in CAD but now I think you need to adjust your standards to REVIT. If you try to make REVIT a CAD program, you will have trouble. DON'T GIVE UP STANDARDS - Just make them be a REVIT standard based on Revit thought processes. I am not saying that REVIT doesn't have a means of seperating these kind of elements. It is actually better than CAD. Look at worksets and phases. Phases will allow you to control visibility (linetype as well as color of line).

We looking into Phases but while we can add phases like RELOCATED to the Project Phases tab, we can't change the graphic overides for that phase in the Graphic Overides tab in Phases. Are we missing something?

You could use the temporary category for this. The graphics overide only lists Existing, demolished, New and Temporary because ultimately in a project any item can be defined by one of these at any particular time in the project. New in Phase 1 would become existing in phase 2 and so on. You can also use the 'Overide graphics in view' to display things differently.

In our plans we could be showing existing/new/demo/relocated/other all at one time since they are retail fixtures inside a store. Where we would have a existing store, demo the junk fixtures, insert new ones and relocate other in the new layout. Make sense?

I think worksets will help you split out new from existing/relocated. In existing layout, demo and items to be relocated can be different then in new layout relocated and new can be different.
