Anyone know how I am able to get a revolved object to actually have faceted surfaces instead of a perfect circular revolve?  I want it to go all 360 degrees around but want some facets to the object.

Do it in Cad revsurf and set your surftabs then import.

OR you can create that in the new conceptual mass if you are working in 2010, of course...

new conceptual mass seems the way to go if you can add  material to that.  So far, I can't find any way or source that explains how to add material to a dwg file so importing from cad won't work I think.

If you create that in CAD, then you can apply walls, roofs, slabs and curtain system by face where you can choose the material you want....

In 2010, with the new conceptual masses you can do the same OR create some families (panels) with the material you want and apply to the model....

thanks for taking up some of your time in your busy life to post such a beneficial comment, lunchtrayrider.  I'm just learning the program as I go and started using it about a month ago, in 2010, without any help other than internet forums, so again, glad you could waste some of your precious time on such a great forum troll comment at my post.  Keep up the productive effort!

an image of the object i'm trying to create to bring material to it.  I brought it in from 3ds, exporting it as a dwg file.  The object doesn't accept the paint tool and is not considered a solid object since 3ds doesn't make objects like revit does.  What is the best way for me to either recreate this object in revit, or add a material to a dwg file that was inserted?  Thank you in advance to anyone willing to provide the answer.

If this object is now 3D dwg, you can assign materials to it by layer. In the project - settings/object styles - imported objects tab.  Fid the dwg - expand it so that you can see the layers - now assign your materials.

i've never tried wwhubs way but is there any reason you just couldn't build that object in revit?

i assume there is a way to build it in revit, but I'm not sure how to go about it.  I tried the settings, layer material option and that had no effect.  I was thinking the easiest way to build it would be to just revolve the faceted profile 360 degrees and changing it to be more like an 8 on the revsurf in cad, but I don't know how to access an option similar to that in revit.  If you have another way to build it, I'd love to have it explained.

I can't quite make out the shape, but it would appear that you could create that from two blends.
