Doing a multi-category takeoff, filtering for material Glass, I get a mixture of doors, windows, shower screens etc.The Material:Area reported appears to be double the actual area of glass. I can only assume Revit is measuring both sides of each pane of glass. MaterialConfusedolume is way out. I calculate the volume at 0.00375 m3, Revit reported 0.00016 m3.

Walls behave in a similar manner. If there are different materials on each side of a wall it will have each material reported seperately (and correctly). If a wall has the same material on each side the Material:Area will be both added together.

I can understand this howv this behaviour works for walls, but not very useful for measuring materials.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is it too dangerous to rely on Revit to measure materials? Am I wasting my time?

The area of glass shows the total surface area of the glass, including the four edges.  The volume is calculated using the pane thickness (usually includes the double glazing and the cavity) in the window family, and not necessarily the volume of the (two?) panes x the glass thickness.  You can set up parameters to calculate these though, as well as the volume if you know the glass thickness.
