what is the best way to do an overpass?

i can think of 3 ways...

1.  columns with roof (roof being the overpass)

2.  ramp

3.  topography

i tried it as topography which worked great except it is solid underneath instead of being open.  anyway to solve this?

 thanks.

Floor.

You just set the floor to the level that you want and you can create the structure and railings, and change levels.  If its realy complicated you can model the components separately.

I would create a generic model family, make it flexible. Families are light geometry and make your model easier to manage.

Or you could do roof my extrusion.

I have done a number of curb gutter and sidewalks using the sweep blend tool. You can do vertical curve and horizontal curve but cannot mix in Revit 2009, I have not shifted to Revit 2010 yet but believe it may be possible to do vertical and horizontal in the same extrusion. See attached PDF for some guide lines. You must name the work planes in order to have the framing elevations attach to them.

Steves method looks good.

I would suggest that you also look at the floor option.  You can slope the floor in any direction and multiple directions by using the edit sub-region functions.  Here you can set in the floor levels at different points.  I have used this method to create a bridge overpass before and it worked quite well.

thanks everyone so much for responding.

i ended up using a combination of extruded roof and roof by footprint.  not perfect because it can't slope in 2 directions (vert. & horiz.) at the same time, but sufficient enough for now.  this did work well in that i could apply a guardrail as a roof fascia sweep.
