Ok i have read all the threads here and have not got the answer yet.  I am try to cut the sign with the model text.  I can't join geometry or anything the italics is just a little to complex to make a void extursion with and very time consuming.  I have a couple of these signs to do and it would things a lot better if i could get this to work right.  Thanks in advance.

You cannot do void model text, but there is a work-around.  Create the text and give it a totally transparent material, wthout reflections.  Join the geometry.  This gives the appearance of void model text.

The model text is set to 100% tranparent and it will not let me join geometry.  I have read that is several posts but REVIT is not letting me do that and it does not render right cause i can't join the geometries.  I thank you for you responce and help, but i did state that i could not join geometry in my post that is why i put the family up so hopefully someone can tell me what i am doing wrong.

I don't know if its possible in a family, but you can do it in the project and create a group that you can copy and move around.  One way to do it is to create a new wall type with one layer and the material and thickness that you require.  Create the model text, give it a transparent material and join it to the wall.  Extrude the text into the wall.  Create an inplace family for the connections.  Create a group for the sign.

By the way, how is the writing created in real life?  Is there a piece of glass behind to hold the inside part of the letters in place?

Well i got it to at least show up it is not cutting the void out but you can see the text in elevation which is what is really needed.  For real construction we will most likely put som connector pieces in there to hold those open.  This is going to get cut by the waterjet, so we willl have to put it into CAD for that.  Thanks again for your help.

This is an old post but just wanted to share something that I found for anyone who reads it.

If you set the text thickness to 0'-0" the text becomes lined based. At this point you can use void extrusion and use the pick line tool to trace the text. You cannot change the wording once you have done this but the process is quick enough that it should not mater too much.

I would recommend making the void in a face based void family and then import into your family. Seems to work a little better

 Hope it helps,

smh
