I'm new to revit and I do a lot of renovations and existing designs.

I know ive probably set this project up incorrectly but what I have done is drawn the house with everything on the existing phase and then added the second story addition on New Construction Phase.

The problem is that when I view the project elevations and 3d model the new windows appear but the existing lower level windows and doors dont appear.  it is like they are hidden inside the walls.

I am using Revit Architecture 2008

Check your view settings.  Set the Phase filter to 'Show complete'.
