Just got a new project in which we're going to have a roof that, in plan view, is shaped similar to half of a McDonald's arch.  And, the roof surface is curved.  (more fun by the minute)  And, the roof structure is going to be exposed.  So, I'm going to have HSS beams with compound curves.

So, where do I start?  And . . . I've already spent about an hour with the "search" tool, and I've read lots about curved beams (curved in one plane), and complex, warped roof decks.  But what about complex, warped beam systems?

Thanks!

Apparently you can import complex geometry from Rhino, and this may be a great option for what you are doing.  I believe complex geometry is possible in Revit, but it takes a lot more effort and forethough.  If you can articulate your roof - the program and geometry that is driving the shape of the roof (what aspects of it may see changes in design) then someone might be able to give you more direction.

Again, a lot of this is forethought and understanding the limitations of Revit - what it will let you do and what it will not do.  Revit does not have so much BIM fuctionality when it comes to complex geometry.

I know you asked about BEAM SYSTEMS but this is the best answer I can give you.  You may end up having to create a lot of in-place or custom families.  But that doesn't mean it can't remain semi-parametric.  It's all about how you set it up.

Sounds like a very interesting project BigD. Have you read about what is coming in Revit 2010. Apparently 1-2 months away. Looks like there maybe some help, in there with xyz lines that you can sweep. Check it out
