Is there a way that portions of a Linked AutoCAD file can be cropped when brought into Revit.  This is what I have.  I have an Architectural Roof plan which is done in AutoCAD and I am linking to my Revit model.  The architectural roof plan shows both the High and Low Roof in the same file.  I want only the Low roof to show on my Low Roof Framing, clipping out the architectural high roof area, and do do the opposite for the High Roof Framing.  I have tried opening the AutoCAD file and doing an xclip.  I also tried to use Wipeout.  Both with no success.  Is there any other options, such as being able to clip out portions of an AutoCAD file inside Revit.

Why don't you clean up the cad file by doing a wblock of just what you want?....

the reason I do not want to use it as a WBLOCK is the Architect or Mechanical is constantly changing the locations of the RTU or drains.  If I use their file, then when I reload the file, it will show any changes which they did not tell me about ...

If i use a WBLOCK, then I have to keep updating that block which could be a pain ... I would like seemless like Autodesk Revit is always bosting about.

Can you make 2 new autocad files-xref your plan into them and clip the xref and adjust the layers then import those into Revit?

Unfortunately creating a second file and adjusting the layers is not an option because this file comes from an outside architect.  I would have to do this everytime I receive a new update of this file from the architect and I am trying to keep it simple by not modifying their file.  What I attempted to do was to create two files, each file would have the same AutoCAD file (roof plan) xref'd (attached - not overlaid) into each of the two new files.  Then I would xclip those files so the correct roof is shown.

When you say the high roof and low roof are in the same file, you mean they are next to one another, correct?  And then in Revit, you want to overlay/underlay the CAD file on two seperate levels.  It seems you need a crop AND a shift, correct?  Because the dwg will have to be moved for the next level?  As such you have to import the CAD file twice?

Please let me know if any of that is incorrect.

Assuming they are next to one another, if you use crop region it will crop the area of the file you don;t want to see.

Alternatively, you can turn the layers on and off, but chances are they are not differentiated in the CAD file (ie A_roof instead of A-roof-high).

Hope that helps, but let me know if my assumptions were wrong.

No, the plans are not next to each other ... what the architect was to draw it all within the building footprint.  Such as if there was two boxes, on being smaller that the other, the smaller one in inside the bigger one.  Now, think of the bigger box being the lower roof and the smaller one being the high roof.  Actually I will attach a PDF of the architectural file.  In the attached PDF file, you will see the High Roof area is clouded and labeled as such.  Also notice the lower roof area surrounds the high roof.  It would be nice if it were separate files, but alias I have what I have.

I can;t test this workaround, and it is a shot in the dark, but maybe it will work.

If you add a floor, or a mass element and put it below your revit roof level, but above the imported CAD plan it will mask the CAD plan.  As such, you'll have two "floors"; one a square (blocking out the high roof) and the other a square donut (blocking out the lower roof).  Of course, not the best solution by any means but it may accomplish what you are looking to do.  Alternatively, you can ask whoever is doing the CAD files to use a different layer for each roof level.

Let me know if it works, if not.....sorry.

Thanks ... I will try it but in general my first impression is the mass element might hide any text or dimension ...

Hopefully Autodesk will solve this issue.

When this is a capable architect he won't change layers every time he has an updated drawing does he?

Cause then the trouble of adjusting the layers (within Revit, not in ACAD) is an one time action. And worth a try, that's my guess.

Can you accomplish what you need with Masking Regions?  Perhaps you can use the pick-line option and just select the roof out-lines (using invisible lines to define the extents of your masking region)?

I was thinking you might be able to create a masking region for each roof and turn them on and off with a filter.  The process might look something like this:

1.  Create a masking region to isolate the high roof and define the masking region as 'high roof' in the element properties box.

2.  Do the same for the low roof and define the masking region as 'low roof'

3.  As a note, if you will need this functionality in multiple views, create a single group of the masking regions (plural - yes both of them together in one group) so that you need only to make changes to the masking region once if needed.  Say your roof outline changes, you may need to adjust your masking region.  Also, this will allow you to use one filter to manipulate multiple masking regions.

4.  Apply a filter.  This is done through the Visibility Graphics Overide dialogue box, under the 'Filters' tab.  Create two new filters for detail items using, Comments->equals-> <insert name of masking region here>

I've tested this and it seems to work well.  Does that make sense?  Let me know if it does or doesn't.

If you apply a masking region to the area, that is good until you need to add some text, dimension or a section callout and due to the limited space, that is where it goes.  It does make much sense and I have thought this is the only real solution ... except for when there is any annotation.  I believe when I thought of this I also tried to make sure the annotation was above the masking region ... and if I recall correctly, it still hid the annotation ... but I could also be mistaken.

Just tested it and had no problem - I'm using Revit 2009.  Even when editing the group and sending the masking region to the front.

I am only loading a floor plan and have no Revit model while testing this.
