I've been using Revit for a while now and am just starting to work with family creation. I'm making a new door family with frames. I want the door frame to adjust to the width of the wall and also have parameters to control frame width. My question is this: Do most users create the frame as an extrusion or a sweep? If I use a sweep do I have to use a pre-defined profile? I always thought that you could sketch the sweep profile in the door family editor, but I don't see that option anywhere. If I create a separate profile and use that for my sweep, how can I adjust the profile to vary with the wall thickness etc? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! P.S. I'm using Revit Arch. 2009.

You will be able to create the profile in the family. Create the path - then the sketch profile will appear. Sorry - at this time, the door is not able to read the wall thickness. Therefore, you will have to do a type or instance parameter to set your profile dimensions.

I don't see any options on the design bar for sketching only lines. The only option I have is profile. When I pick profile I see the tab to load profile. Their is a drop down with existing profile names and the top name is "by sketch" but this options still doesn't show many any linework options? I'm still lost...

Wait... I see. I have to create the profile in a plan type view instead of an elevation view. My bad!! But, you still say that I can't have the profile adjust to the wall thickness correct? This is because you can't lock both side of the profile to the interior and exterior face of the wall?

You can lock the profile to the edges of the wall so that it will adjust with the wall thickness. Align and lock them to the reference planes that define the faces of the wall while still in sketch mode.

You said you wanted parameters to control the frame size. You can have the frame adjust to the wall a show as you want but you will not be able to schedule the frame size unless you set it.
