For my first family I would like to build a five element bay window with the elements arranged around a semi circular path.... I feel this is probably over ambitious but...

How should I constrain the path of the 5 windows?  If I simply have 5 segments and make then EQ then as the opening width changes I might get a problem since EQ is easy to meet as a constraint but the angular relationship need not be maintained.

I think I need to impose some kind of angular constraint?   Any examples of distributing 5 elements around an arc?

this is definatley too ambtious for a first family,

you are best looking for a family simialr to this in the download section and then take it apart so you understand how it was built then go about creating your own family.

You might consider using a curtain wall instead of a window family to create this using a circular array of reference planes.  The curtain wall grid lines snap to the ref planes and you can create the effect of a bay window.

Thanks for the curtain wall suggestion; I think I will follow that avenue.

I have given up (at least temporarily) on the 5 element curved bay window family as I'm not convinced the geometry can be expressed as a closed form.... i.e. solution for the angles from opening width and bay projection requires an iterative solution.... but I may be wrong.

It may be possible to achieve this but it would be complicated to build, even for an experienced user.  You should be able to create the bay window as accurately as reequired using the curtain wall option.
