the render material on a family element?

it would go something like:

1. highlight the family element..

2. click edit family on the options bar..

3. click open for editing..

4. click family types?

5. materials and finishes?

6.?  7.?  8.?  ?  ?  ?  ?

6. Click the button on the right.

7. Add a parameter.

8. Select a group under which to list it.

9. Give it a name.

10.  Select whether it would be an instance or type property.

11.  Close the dialogue boxes.

i don't think this is the way to go.

1 make a new object style in the family.

2 give this object style a material

3 go to the elements of the family and give them the correct object style.

When you're in a project now, you can change every material you want just bij selecting object style's en change the material.

This way you always keep the correct material names. and can change things easily.

i need also.. i keep meaning to master families but i haven't yet..

don- i guess i'm not that advanced..

"make a new object style in the family"?

once i click on the object and click edit

family i go into the family editor.. the only

thing that looks logical to click on is the "family types"

button on the design bar..

once in the family types dialog i see nothing

that i would know about making a "new object

style".. there is a lot of stuff in that dialog and

i don't see anything like that..

WY,

Open up the family, right click on the element (or window the required elements) > click properties > go down to materials and finishes. There will be a ... button that opens up your materials window. Duplicate/create a new material - Tick the 'Use Render Appearance for Shading' box under the graphics tab. Go onto the next tab Render Appearance and click replace to change materials.

Hit Ok when your done and it will apply to that element.

Also when naming a new material type i would give it something distinctive so its easier to recognise in your project.

Hope this helps

WY,

Go to "Settings" Then "Object styles" and make a new object style. (give this a distinctive name)

When you created a new object style go to the last horizontal box. (click in the most right corner of the box) (see pic)

Now you are in the material window. duplicate a material and give it a recognisable name.

Now select the part of the family you wanna give a material. Go to the elements properties.

and change the subcategory. (this is linked to the objectstyle you made.) (see pic)

When you are in a project now you can go to settings-> object style's again select the kind of family you made, select the good subcategory and change the material.

AMAZING- everyone has different instructions and all but one

deadended for me..

and the one i understood didn't work..

bring in the yellow beetle car put it in 3D view..

highlight the lines red and

then click edit family on the options bar..

then click the little box that appears-

"open the RPC beetle for editing"..

then i highlight the car again with red lines..

then i click the element properties..

then i click that field next to the word materials

and then click that tiny button that opens

the big materials dialog with the rendering

stuff..

i duplicate default so i have default 2..

somebody said put a check mark next to

"use render appearance for shading"-

then i click the tab "render appearance"

then the "replace" button..

then i pick the color red from the paint..

i click ok ok ok and then i load the car

back into the project and rending it and

guess what? yup- it's still yellow.. pisses me off..

anybody got any ideas?

propably you have used a material in your family which is also used in the project.

Materials in the project always come before materials in the family.

So you should write down the material used for the beetle and look by Setting-> material library in your project.

Change the material to red paint and you're beetle will be red.

WYS1WYG

when you are duplicating material types to create new ones make sure you give it a distinctive name that will relate to that element... you said you called it Default 2.... when you loaded that into your project, your project was using its own version of 'Default 2', not the one you set up in the family.

again, call it somthing distinctive and it will load into the project along with the family.

i'm stumped..

open brand new project to default template..

component/load/RPC beetle..

place on level one..

make 3D view..

nice big wireframe car click to highlight red..

click edit family on the options bar..

open "RPC Beetle" for editing? yes..

highlight lines again to red in the family editor..

open element properties dialog..

next to the word materials is the words"by catagory"..

click on "by catagory" and little button appears to the right..

little button goes to "materials" dialog with

all the rendering stuff..

"default" is highlighted in the materials dialog..

click duplicate and type in the name:

"BLOODY RED BEETLE JUICE"...

click ok and bloody red beetle juice is

now highlighted..

check "use render appearance for shading"..

click the "render appearance" tab..

click the "replace" button..

select paint/dark red glossy..

click ok- click ok again..

car lines are still highlighted red in family editor..

click "load into project" because there is

no rendering in the family editor apparently..

a small dialog titled "reload family" says:

family "RPC Beetle" is already in use in this project.

overwrite the existing version?

(here is where there could be a problem)..

no check next to: "Override parameter values of

existing types"

but just click yes..

then the car is back in the project in the 3D view..

if the car has been made bloody red in the family editor-

why does it still render yellow in the project?

that's like ordering a green car from the factory and

when you get it it's purple..

what else can i do? besides go crazy..

S I M P L E

The material set in the family editor is always over-ridden by the material which exists in the project.  Identify what the material is called in the family then set that to what you want in the project!

thanks HUB- of course it's simple- i just need to find it..

"always over-ridden by the material which exists in the project"

the first thing i did after loading the car back into the project

was highlight the car and click on element properties..

then edit/new- then under identity data is render appearance

properties and render appearance..

render appearance is the render appearance library with

one thumbnail being the car with its default name under it..

the render appearance properties "edit" has the same thumbnail

and name with only the glass and license plate stuff..

so there is nothing else in type properties or element properties..

now i go to settings> materials and the name "blood red" is

highlighted and all the render stuff is for that like i set in the

family editor.. and searching every material in the list there is

nothing else about the car..

now back to the 3D view and highlight the car.. click on the

paint bucket.. blood red shows on the options bar along

with all the other materials on the list- but the paint bucket

has no affect on the car.. the car still renders yellow..

i don't know where else to look..

Hi WYS1WYG, I think that nobody has explained to you, what is a RPC file.....ArchVision realpeople, cars, trees, etc, are pictures of actual people and/or objects from multiple angles that display using a technique called image-based rendering. They are part of ArchVision's RPC (Rich Photorealistic Content) product family. This means that you can't change the main part of the models (materials, clothes, etc.), only certain properties (see image taken from the help menu related with your car's properties), there's nothing about changing its color, isn't it?. If you want cars with materials that can be changed by you in anytime, why don't you check in the Download section of this site, there are lots of them and better than the yellow one that you have right now....
