Ok I have pouring thru these forums and reading some books on this program but i am still having a few issues understanding the families and customizing them.

2 examples of what i am trying to accomplish and the steps i have taken

I have a double front door that was a standard in revit.  I used this door for the front door and the back door.  The only difference between the two of them is that the back door has a sidelite on either side and a transom above.  So i went to the family editor and played with it.  I have not been able to successfully make this configuration exactly the way i wanted it but i did notice the changes i made not only changed on the back door but it changed on the front as well.  What did i do wrong???

Second i wasn't making a standard doric column in the revit library into a double doric column on a single base.  Had some issues aligning the revolved object but that also changed all the columns.

What am i misunderstanding about families???

Also real quick what is the quickest way to make stucco bands around the entire structure???

Hi ksig1969,first welcome to this world...... the basic part that you have to understand about families is that all of them have their own properties, so e.g. if you have 10 doors "x" in your project and you change the properties of one of them, automatically you will change the properties of the other 9 "x" doors, unless you duplicate them. However, if you want to edit only one door, first edit it (see image) and second save it with another name so you can load it now into your project without alter the other ones....

aha!!! Well that makes sense!!! i don't know why i didn't think to save as before.

Well with that problem solved......

Does anyone know of a video showing how to add sidelights and transoms to doors and windows????  I understand you have to edit them in the family editor but then it gets hairy in there, with the opening and stretching.

Also,

Thanks for you help erland that makes sense now

The tutorials in the help menu on creating door and window families are very informative in this regard (assuming that you have downloaded them).  You will learn how to create these items and make them parametric.  It will be quite hairy if you have not done these tutorials.
