I am trying to create a new handrail that has a stainless steel top rail with stainless steel supports every 4'-0".  The space in between the supports is to be a single sheet of 1/4" tempered glass. (There will obviously need to be a SS bottom rail 3 1/2" AFF to support the glass).  However, when I try to modify the handrail system, using a sheet of glass isn't an option.  Do I need to create a new family which is a "rail" that is 1/4"x 36"?  This seems like kind of a conveluted way of doing this.

I went through similar situation which I wanted a custom handrail.

I created another family from scratch with the desired specification.

I hope this helps...

The glass panels will be ballusters. Revit has some in the library or you can create your own family.

If the glass panels are solid post to post, model the panels as a rail and yes, it can be glass, wood or whatever you want.

If the glass panels are to be kept short of the supports, it may be best to model this as several railings in the same place.  One railing is just a glass rail.  You will need multiples of this ... one for each section - or this could be one-inplace family.  The other railing has your posts and top rail.

I'm looking @ this family file (it's just the one downloaded from the Revit site) in order to get ideas on how to build my own.  I just don't know why it is at an angle.  What is the benefit of doing this?  How are they making this?  Basically, does anyone have a tutorial to explain this?

It is so that it can be used on a stair or ramp - the angle can be set to zero.

Thanks for all of your imput.  I did lots of trial and error to figure this out.  I ended up creating new profile families for the top and bottom rails.  I also created new families for the metal baluster and the glass panel (actually a simple baluster, not a boluster panel).  My last question is in regards to clamps that will hold the glass panel in place.  I want to use a simple metal and rubber clamp about 12" o.c.  Should I: a) model one as a mass, copy it into the proper places, and then group all of them with the handrail? or b) create the glass as a baluster panel which includes these clamps (this would make sure that the clamps don't get lost if the handrail gets moved)?
