is it possible to make a legend that shows the materials eg colour, surface pattern etc. couldn't find anything in help

You can place jpg images on sheets and in legends but you would need to print these differently than your CD documents ... unless you are doing those in color.

You can do this with family members such as windows by dragging them from the families in the project browser into a legend view.  One way that you could work around to get a legend for walls is to create small sections of wall showing the different finishes and hide them in views or place them outside the crop boundaries.  If this is a problem, export the view and import it into a drafting view and erase the walls from the actual project - see image.

I'm setting up templates for the office drawing set and have run into a similar issue.  With Revit 2012 now, is there any intuitive way to create a general material legend showing hatches?  I know how to create a legend component, but then I can only change that to a wall type, etc., but not materials.  My workaround so far has been creating small filled regions with the hatch then annotating them, but this seems clumsy by Revit standards.  Am I missing something?
