about 60% done rendering a large file, and wondering if i hit cancel does whats been done get lost or can it be saved/ exported? kind of a stupid question but cant remember at the moment and time is of the essence.

If you cancel the rendering before it's finished you can still export the image as far as it has rendered. See the attached image which shows the rendering stopped at 50%.
