in r2009, i have inserted 6 of the r2009 downlights and a pendant light.  they are set to "on" in the render window.  None seem to be throwing any light.  to confirm that, I turn the sun "off" ("interior - artifical lights only" setting) and the scene goes black.  What am I doing wrong?  see attached file to see the rendering and the settings dialog.

one more observation.  No matter what I do, the r2009 lights dont seem to be turned on.  I inserted a table lamp fixture from 2008... it seems to be the only light emitting object in the scene.  the attached "artifical lights" dialog from the rendering scene shows that the lights are set to on.   I even went into the properties of the down light and pendant light families and turned the dimmer all the way up.  No go.  the pendant you see in the middle is obviously not emitting light.

one last idea i tried.  i inserted a "ceiling" at the same elevation as the bottom of the floor so that the lights would go in.  I thought maybe the floor conflicted, but if i delete that floor above leaving only the ceiling i get the same results.

Presentation tomorrow, hope you can help.

I believe that some of the sunken lights from Revit have the light source in the wrong place.  Try and edit the family and lower the light source.

You are exactly right.  you have to open the light family, unlock the light source and move it down below the ceiling plane in the model.   It looks like the thought was that the can light would have a void cutting out whatever it was inserted into, but that doesn't happen.

Thanks a million, Tim!
