I have created a solid model of a building. I used the wall by face tool to create the four exterior walls. I need to add voids where the doors and windows will go. The client does not want actual door and window objects at this time, just voids representing them. When I try to create a void I get the "No solid geometry to cut" error. It tells me to use the Cut Geometry tool, but what would I create representing a door or window that will cut the geometry?

I have attached a JPG of the model.

Use the wall opening function under modelling (Opening, Wall opening).

I don't believe I would do this the way you are because I think you will be doing things twice ... maybe more than that.

First, your model appears to be simple so why not use a generic wall?   Walls by face are useful for complex-abnormal geometry.

Second, you can use doors and windows  that are just openings.  Using these would allow you to just swap them out when youknow what you want. Voids and wall openings will not do that.  You will have to remove that then place a door or window.

Actually the model will be more complex as I develop it. I guess I should start over with a basic solid and create the actual shape of the structure. Some of the walls have offsets in them amd the front facade has a tower on one side.

The client wants two versions.

The first is to be a basic solid model with the exterior shape defined and the doors and windows done as voids that do not go all the way through, but only hava a few inches of depth.

The second phase will be a model with walls, roof, and doors and window objects, but no internal floors, walls, etc.

I have never used Revit to build a mass model. I have built many models using the regular tools. I don't have a grasp of building a mass model using solids and voids. I thought it would be pretty simple. The help file mentions s "Building Maker" tool, but I cannot find it in Revit Architecture 2009 WU2. I have attached a PDF of the 2D AutoCAD file I have for the project.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Daryl

You could create a profile and use it in a vertical wall reveal set to the correct height using a reference plane.  You should be able to create a profile family that is parametric for different door and window widths.  As WW suggests, you will have to replace all of these afterwards.  A better solution may be to create blank openings as WW suggests, with an extrusion within the opening with an offset from the wall finish and a material parameter so that you can match it with the wall.

What the client is looking for in phase 1 is a monochromatic 3D revit mass model that looks like one of those you get from a 3D printer. From all the replies, which have been very helpful, it seems that Revit does not have the capability to let me build a mass that resembles the outside shape of the project with simple pushed in looking voids that represent the the doors and windows.

I think I will tell him I can build a generic model from generic Revit objects and see if he buys that.  I can build a model with wall, roof , door, and window objects faster.

Thanks

You should be able to get a monochromatic model with indentations for the doors and windows by creating a simple door and window family with an extrusion in the opening with a material parameter to match the walls.
