I am new to Revit. I understand work planes (creating, naming, visibility...) but HOW do i delete a workplane that i have created when i no longer need it? Is it me or is this less than straightforward? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

You do mean work plane - not reference plane? Work planes are not really created - they are set. As such, you never delete them, you just change which one is current. When you open a floor plan, the work plane is automatically set to the level. If you are in an elevation, you don't need a work plane unless you are creating a 3d element that needs a plane rather than a host. 3D lines in elevation is an example of something that needs a work plane. But 2d lines require nothing. Does this help your understanding?

Thanks. Created or set...Revit appears to be keeping a record of all the work planes i have used. let me elaborate a bit. i have created work planes for creating 3D geometry of "in-place families," etc and it seems REVIT has even created and named some other work planes after I have picked faces of 3D elements in my model(see attached jpeg - e.g. "purlin 6", "purlin 23", etc). Now these work planes appear in my ever growing list and i dont need or want them anymore.... so how do i tell REVIT to delete them so that my list contains only the ones i want and am likely to use again?

I don't think you could ever purge a "reference plane"? The only way I've ever been able to get rid of them in your pull-down list of work-planes is to FIND the reference plane, pick it, then delete. It will automatically disappear from the list after this procedure. I've had problems when a reference plane was created at a weird angle on a section that was eventually deleted. With the section gone I could no longer find the reference plane to delete it. It drove me crazy!!!

Purge Unused will not get rid of Reference Planes, and after experimenting I found it will not remove unused Work Planes from the drop down list either. The only way I found was to delete the element that defines the work plane. Seems like a bit of a flaw.

If you delete the ref. plane with that name when you Purge revit "Clean" the drawing...

Thanks. Agreed - this is cumbersome. You have to remember which view you created the reference plane in...and then delete them like they are objects. maybe its best to encode more information in the new refernce plane names give that we assign like "temp" and the name of the view in whiich they are hosted in e.g. ref plane name: "temp-east elev-name" what a drag. surely somebody has a silver bullet.

It really does seem flawed. A "purge" would certainly be a nice feature to have, but I'm sure the Revit Creators had a good reason not to give it to us. You run the risk of purging a reference plane that has something important attached to it.

But the biggest problem, i think is, when in your drawing you create several "Create-in-place" objects and inside them you create a lots of ref. planes with names, and sometimes there are inside the Voids...

your right Typhoon. Naming reference planes inside an in-place family seems dangerous. I never do it !!!

But DANO3D, "You run the risk of purging a reference plane that has something important attached to it." when you do a Purge Revit ONLY purge what is in the Draw.. and it's NOT USING, so the problem is if you Delete a ref. plane with obj. attached and you aren't "Looking" and the obj. are gone.... but this is a issue you must pay atention and you know that's happen...

Typhoon. You need to do a littlee experiment in Revit, because you really don't know what you're talking about. Like everyone has been saying in this post... YOU CAN'T PURGE REFERENCE PLANES. TRY IT!!!!!!!!!!!
