As anyone got the answer? What is heavier on the computer 240KB 2D family symbol file representing WC or 240KB 3D family model file representing WC but as 3D model?

hi i don't know about your question, but a 2d family should be a lot smaller than a 3d family. use 2d famlies as much as possible.

There is not a simple yes/no answer here because as you use REVIT, you will find some strange things. Take a simple 2d toilet.  If it is built with only symbollic lines and you add a texture pattern to the floor, the floor pattern will go through the toilet.  OK - you add a masking region to the family.  Now it seems to work- right?  Sometimes does, sometimes doesn't.  If it does, when you make a dependent view, it sometimes doesn't work.  I can't seem to predict when this happens - just seems to.  If you elevate the fixture a fraction though, the masking region now works.

We, however, like to add a thin floor for tile areas rather than editing the floor face and doing regions.  When you add this on top of the other floor, again you have trouble with the 2D toilet.     The solution to this problem is to add a work plane in the family above the floor plane and place your masking region on that.

Another point to consider is will you ever want to see the element in 3d?  If so, you may want to build the family 2d/3d and turn off the 3d elements in plans and elevations.  Family size is slightly larger but in 2d views the speed is not affected.  Remember, the size of the family impacts files size only once.  Every instance of the family only has a pointer to the family description.

Thanks for the answers. Still bit confused, so I ask the question in another way, in what situations the computer will work faster: in a drawing with 100 2D toilet seats or in a drawing with 100 3D toilet seats. The reason for my confusion is because both families are the same size.

Depends on what your doing.  If you are in 3d views and only have 2d elements, REVIT will ignore them.  Very fast compared to 3d.... but then again, you don't see any toilets if you need to.   If you are in a 2D view, REVIT will have to look at each 3D element in the family and determine what it hides.  Obviously, the more complicated the 3D family, the longer it takes.

It all just comes down to what is necessary. I would say that if you dont need to show the toilet 3-Dimensionally it would in most cases be better speedwise to have it as 2-D. If you need to see it 3-D then it doesnt really matter which way is faster because you have to have the 3-D.
