Hi Everyone,

I have created a few families for eg a M12 bolt and it is horizontal and I want to load it into a project and rotate it in an elevation/Section so it will be paralel to the roof pitch but it will not let me rotate it, why is this? will I need to try and set up a rotation parameter in the family itself or is there a way you can rotate it once loaded into the project, maybe t a Ref plane or something.

Any help would be great thanks

Patty

Families adhere to the work plane of the view that they are inserted in. So I would agree that you are probably best building in an angle parameter into the family, to give you maximum flexibility.

I must say that I am intrigued that you are modelling right down to individual bolts??!!!

Regards,

Ian

Edit the family and under Settings / family category & parameters, uncheck the always vertical option.

It does sound rediculous to make 3d bolt families, but I'm finding them useful.

I've attached a pdf-drawing to show the instance where I'm using them... 3d- exploded detail views.

The bolts I created are "face-based" with parameters to offset either the bolt or the nut from the insert face.

Hope this information is useful to you.

Thanks Guys I’ll give that a go, and thanks for that dano that was a great help and I liked the exploded view it looks great. The reason for the bolt families is we are starting to do a bit of 3D steel detailing in revit and we set a parameter to the bolts so that we can schedule them easily for a bolt list for the fabricator. The sections and details are working out really good as well once everything is modeled to actual sizes.I have attached a M12 bolt that we have made

thanks Pattyceads.

I like your bolt (very accurate). Mine is more abstract.
