I cannot use this wall-based stair lift family (attached file). Whenever I attach it to the wall, it says "Can't make type Stair.... family." This file was taken from the downloads page.

This family had several constraint problems.

The main problem was the lifts relationship to the "wall face" didn't allow different wall thickness to be used. This will "blow-up" an attempt to load a problem family everytime !!! (one of the first issues I look for).

Another problem was the "lift platform". With so many parts making this element, it really needed to be created as a "nested family" to allow it to move around without blowing apart.

It looked like there were some "dead constraints" that didn't affect this basic model from being inserted so I didn't attempt to fix them... maybe you can do this?

Hope this helps you.
