Here is a parametric nut detail item for you. I was surprised I couldn't find this in the imperial library, so I made one. You input the Rod Diameter and all the rest of the dimensions update. There is an optional masking region.

The dimensions are all based on the proportions of a nut for a 1-inch rod. The height of the nut is a little less than the diameter of the rod. I know actual nut dimensions don't scale perfectly from that, but this worked for my purposes. If you need precise dimensions, you could just edit the family to take out the equations and save your types that way.
