Started resized gallery images on upload, and using static sizes. Previously images were dynamically generated...and some of them still are. This increases bandwidth needs as well as page load times...because the images are not cached on the users browser. The benefit was that it reduced disk space needs on the server...plus it was an interesting experiment in functionality...and it has worked well for the last 2 1/2 years, but it's time to move on. We are moving the gallery images away from dynamic first, and will observe the bandwith impact. other images may remain dynamic...we'll see.
