I'm brand new to the Revit scene so please excuse any noobieness. I recently started using Revit at work, I'm a draftsman by trade and my office decided to make the jump to Revit instead of paying some outside company thousands of dollars to produce renderings for us.

So far I'm totally enjoying the program, I've only come across a few things that have thrown me for a loop. When I checked the forums looking for answers I usually find that everyone has the same problem so I don't feel too bad.

I've got a few questions to start off my time here, so please bear with me:

1) I've downloaded some of the tree models from the downloads section, mostly coniferous, and when I go to render them they only show up in gray. Am I missing some setting somewhere or are they not complete.

2) I keep running across an issue where I'll assign a material, to fascia board for instance, but when I render it picks up the skybox color(s) and render them instead. But it's not consistent. Not all of the fascia board will pick up the skybox. I've done a global override for the material type but have yet to have any luck. Any ideas?

I've included an example of what I'm talking about in this question.

3) What's the deal with curbs and sidewalks not sloping with the topo? I've searched the forums and it seems like there's a pretty involved process to achieve this result, usually resulting in what I would call "faking it."

That's all for now. Thanks in advance for any help I receive.

Trevor,

I have been using revit for about 7 years now. My name is Jed and my company name is True Vision Designs.

I live in the Oregon/Washington area. When it comes to rendering it is all about the matterial or materials that are attached to the objects that you are rendering. For instance if you have a brick wall then what you need to do is go to your materials and see what image is associated with that brick. You do this by selecting "settings" then "materials". Once in the material list, find the massory-brick. When you select it you are offered a surface pattern which you can change for you elevation views and an accurender option that is for rendering. These to area can be totally different. If you select Accurender you will see many options. Play with this and I think you wiull be able to figure out you problem.

Special note... Rendering images in accurender are in an 18"X18" format. If you want to be a little more advanced then you can make your own materials by attaching your own images. Createand have fun. I use snagit to capture textures and paint styles and save the images in an 18"X18" format.

I will be happy to help with any further questions. Have a great day.

Jed

Thank you very much. I appreciate the help. I ended up changing the material associated with the objects that were giving me trouble and voila, problem solved.

Again, thanks for the help.

About the curbs and sidewalks, the workaround and "faking it" is about all you can do at this point.  Its pretty high on my wishlist too.  Some of the curbs that I created a few versions ago can be rotated to sort of fit the topo, but again, its just a workaround.  I've tried making a separate toposurface on top of my base surface and giving it a curb material, but that's a royal PIA and not even that good looking.
