I am having visibility issues with symbolic lines. Whenever I create a new family (from this template for instance) symbolic lines do not show up in elevation unless there are other model objects visible, see the attached project. If you go to the 1-a elevation and drag a window over the the center of the wall you will see the wall based family. If you select this family and turn on the "vis" parameter (turns on a mass object) then the symbolic lines show up, if there is no other geometry visible then the lines appear to be hidden(?) and cannot be aligned, dimensioned, etc. The symbolic lines also appear in elevation if there is geometry (solid or even symbolic lines) shown in plan. I have tried this several times with the same result. I have even tried creating a new object style for the symbolic lines and nothing seems to work. On a side note symbolic lines appear to work just fine in plan view... I am using Revit 20080101_2345. I have attached a project with the problematic family as well as the default project template and the generic wall based template. PS. I am aware of the symbolic line issue where it will sometimes ask you which (reference) plane you want to host them on. When this happens I pick a plane, draw a line somewhere, exit out of the command, reselect symbolic lines, draw what I want, and then delete the first line (which is actually a model line).

Here are the template files. They are right out of the box but in case it helps. This is the response that I got from my reseller. "I agree with what Nicholas has figured out in the family creation process. If you turn off the visibility of the primary object in the family, it also turns off the symbolic lines. A visibility parameter affects the object in any view, 3d, plan, elevation, etc. This makes sense, because if you can't see the main object in any view then you shouldn't be able to see the lines representing the object. If you want to be able to control the visibility of the solid with a visibility parameter and have the visibility of the lines independent, then you should use model lines (instead of symbolic lines). This way the lines are independent not symbolizing something else. (see the attached family). Then you can click on the model lines and decide if you want them to show in plan/rcp, front/back, left right. However, you will see the model lines in 3D unless you use linework to hide them" Not that it really helped me at all. What I want to do is start my new families off by importing exsisting cad backgrounds, tracing them with symbolic lines and then dumping the cad. This way the family will look correct in elevation and someday when I have time I will model out the entire object. But for now I cant get the symbolic lines to show in elevation unless there is a visible model object or I add symbolic lines in plan also (sometimes I dont want to see the object in plan just elevation but it does need to be wall hosted, i.e. clocks). Any thoughts or help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks, Nick
