A few dimensioning tips. You can dimension using the dimension tool and tab around elements to get what you would like. There is also a toggle in the settings menu/temporary dimensions to change the temporary dimensions (the blue ruler you speak of) to be strung from wall center or wall face and for window dimesions to be from centerline or opening. You can dimension seval openings at once (click on wall) or sevaral grid lines. If you need to remove one of those dimensions, say in the middle of the string. It becomes rather difficult to do so.

Dimensioning in Revit is always continuous, until you click on the dimension line itself. If you continue clicking on objects that you want to dimension then the dim string will continue.
