I am developing a master plan which is made up of several building types, each repeated multiple times.  Each building type is a separate Revit file linked into a main host file, which also includes the sitework for the master plan.

I want to show the buildings in separate phases, showing the development of the master plan over time.  I understand how to set up phases in a single file, but is there a way to associate phases with linked files?

We can do a workaround by turning specific links on and off in views, but I would prefer to do it by phasing.  Thanks for any suggestions!

For each view, look under VG - REVIT LINKS - Display Settings - Custom - Basics - Custom and set your phase.

That method only gives me the choices of "By Host View," "Last," "Existing," and "New Construction".  I created 4 phases, named Phase 1, Phase 2, etc. - but these phases do not show up as choices under VG-Revit Links.  I want to associate the link with a specific phase.  Using the VG method seems to associate the link with whatever phase the view is set to;  changing the phase in View Properties would then change what phase the link is associated with.
