I am currently working on a restroom renovation and I am curious as to how to create tile patterns for walls in elevation and floors in plan. I have seen alot of info on line patterns ex. 2"x2" tiles, 4"x4" tiles but I am looking for a way to show a tile design layout. Such as all white tiles with a horizontal line of gray tiles at 3' high in elevation. Or in plan show a white tile floor with a gray tile border.

I would suggest using the split face tool to define the location of these patterns and then define the look of them using your materials menu. Once you have defined the look and material you can use the paint tool and click on the split faces you defined earlier.

Well I have read just about every post on splitting faces for tile work and did not realize until now that there is a difference between the split tool and the split face tool. Now I know. lol.

So my plan was to create a "tic tac toe" style band on the walls at about 2' 8". I use split face tool, select wall, and start happily drawing my squares, Finish sketch, error-lines intersect, delete lines, more errors. OK, so draw one square at a time. Split face tool, select wall, draw square, finish sketch. Do this about 10,000 times are u kidding me? Perhaps I am missing something.

I am a die hard revit fan. However I am the revit guinea pig in my office. So all the die hard digital hand drafters are pointing and laughing and the boss is saying export to CAD.

So unfortunately this may be the last project this company does in Revit for a long while. Very sad day.

Well, back to line, offset, hatch. Sad

Gee, I hate to see that happen.  I think you may not understand what I wrote.  First of all, I would suggest being in a

3d view when you are using the split face tool to make sure you are on the face that you want and not a face on the opposite side of the wall (which has happened to me).

Secondly, I want to make sure you understand that you are not drawing the tic tac toe pattern with the split face tool, just the area where you want the pattern to appear.  For the pattern itself you will use the paint tool (little bucket of paint button on tool bar usually right next to the split face button).  You will have to go into your material library and find or create your tic tac toe pattern first and when you've done that you can use the paint tool, select the tic tac toe pattern you just created the same way you would a wall or a window or a door type (with the pull down menu) and then click on the split face you created earlier.

Clear as mud, right?

email me if you need and maybe i'll give you my phone #

I have been working through the same problem myself.  So far, the best option I have found is a curtain wall which also allows for a grout joint.  It just takes some customizing (grout profile, tile material, curtain wall panel).  It is still a pain in the butt, though.

I did this pattern with split face, filled regions, and masked regions quicker than I did it in AutoCAD.
