I've been setting here for 30 minutes waiting for REVIT to do a major revision to full room groups for a hotel project.  I really built these groups too large so I'm in the process of splitting them up.  Each group has over 50 families plus walls/rooms/doors and I'm swapping out about 45 rooms with revised groups.  I was lulled into thinking that groups would be a great way to go...  They are except when you have to make big changes late in the game.

My problem is that my dual core - 2.136GHz system is only allocating 50% of the cpu time to REVIT.  Is there a way to boost this performance?

Not eveything works with 2 processors. I think that photoshop and most adobe programs can use a dual core, but thats about it. Apparently Revit only has the ability to use 1 core so you are only going to see 50% (half of 2 cores).

You could run another instance of Revit and that should flip over to the second processor, then at least you could work on something else while you are waiting.

That's where we got to ...

Now the question is will the new quad core give us any benefit?  Sounds like they won't.

Not unless you can get Revit to support multiple processors.

Actually you could end up with a slower computer if you go to the quad core. The more core the slower each individuall one tends to be....

I guess this should be a wishlist item.

I would say more important then processor is going to be your network speed (are you using gigabit?) and then drive speed (raid 0 or 0+1 would really help) and then video card for screen refreshes and then processor.  This is what I have found helps speed.

I am currently battling rendering speed. I have dual processors (Intel Xenon 2.33), 8 gig ram, and a 2 gig ram video. Still very slow. It is a fairly new machine.

Revit will not use multiple cores that is why it is only at 50% if you baught a quad it would show 25%.  However the mentalray in 2009 uses up to 4, so if you use revit for rendering you will find improvement here.

Best ways to boost CPU performance with revit is to get a higehr speed CPU 2.5+ is best, and have it a server grade CPU so you can overclock it with out it having damaging affects.  Also I would recomend upgrading your OS to XP x64 rather than XP x86 as the 64 bit platform delegates taskes with Revit much better than does x86.

A quad may still not be a bad idea right now...Revit should be multi core compatible sooner or later, pretty difficult to get this programed though so it might be a while.

I use Vista Business with Revit. Rendering only shows 50% CPU usage. If I pull a CPU out, do you think that would speed it up?

It starts at 99%, but by 12 percent completion, the CPU drops to 50%

not all aspects of rendering are necessarily multi-threaded.
