Does anyone else use a program other than AutoCAD and trying to move into Revit?

it should not matter what cad system you are using when you move to revit once it can make eiter dwg or dfx. i have had autocad users fail when moving to revit as they haven't but the time in or got enough training, i'v also had micro station, bricks cad and archicad clients move to revit with no problem.

I gues the problem we are facing is the transition, we dont have the time, for this project, to redo all details in Revit and want to use our standard details but the is a problem with text, although one type of text may be in both programs, they dont print the same....

revit doesn't have they same control of text that other cad programs do, and i like it like this as it focus the desing staff on doing what they should do which is designing rather than spending hours trying to have the nicest looking text out there.

you will have to decide which is best for you, either having some text that doesn't look the exact same as your old dumb cad system but is made in revit with all the benifits that it brings or dumping a revit project half way through and loosing all the advantages that revit gives and the possibility that your boss will think that revit doesn't work in your firm so revit may be dropped.

also once you get used to revit, your projects even the 2D parts look so much better than autocad or similar.

this sounds like your first project. did you get training if so how much? and do you not have a consultant (usually the people who did your training) that can come in and fix your text problems as i'm sure they can be fixed.  for the price of one days consultancy it may save you days of work, put it like that to your boss.

We are also in the tranistion phase between ACA and Revit. The general response that we have gotten from consultants and resellers is to use your old CAD details and print them out of CAD if you are having to many problems. The idea is for a slow and steady transition rather than one that forces you to drop everything and start over. In the case of most large firms (or really anybody who has been in business for a while) no one is willing to lose all of the standards and work that has been complied over the last umpteen years. Just use the old stuff and draw new details where applicable. If you really want everything to plot out of Revit you could plot out an image or .pdf from CAD and insert this into your sheets. If you want to take it a step further you could create a dummy detail inthe same place as the image and then hide it...

For fonts, be sure that you include in your Revit .shx font map the appropriate mapping you want to occur.  Locate the file as shown in the attached picture and follow the instruction in the font map file when you open it in a text editor.

As for existing details done in CAD, create drafting views for each of them and simply LINK them in (do not IMPORT).  Once they are linked in the details act like xrefs as changes to the CAD file will update the Revit drafting view.  When placing a callout for the detail or section be sure to check the 'reference other view' box on the options bar and choose your drafting view with the appropriate detail.
