This perameter exist in each solid.  If you look at a family that is already created, you will find that each solid has a parameter for material.  If you look at a solid's properties will will notice that the material value is greyed out, and to the right you will see a little equals = sign.  When each of these solids were created, instead of assigning a material in each properties dialog they have assigned a parameter that can be adjusted from the Family Types dialog.  This is how the material is adjustable inside your project.  So, if the family wasn't orginized real well during its construction, then you might not have control of the materials inside the project.  If this is the case, you can simply edit the family, then select each peice and open its properties dialog.  Click on the little equals = box to the right of the Materials Value, click Add Parameter, then give the parameter a name you will recognize later.  You should also change the Group Parameter Under: to Materials and Finishes.  Fix all of the solids to have a material parameter that you can access from the Family Types, and Load into Project.  Your good to go.

 Hope this helps

I'm trying to produce a C&M index similar to the one attached i was trying to add a parameter to my materials, one option for Leed information, another for Color, and Location. Previously i need a parameter "Discipline Name" to organize my materials Carpet, Ceramic Tile, Metal,... i didnt' it so fast that i don't remember what i was clicking.  Please help how can i create another material parameter.  i have tried the following (image3) , i don't know what i'm doing wrong.
